Hello everyone! My name is Kathryn Martin, but I prefer to be called "Kate." I am placed at Titusville Middle School in 6th and 7th grade classrooms. My major is Middle Level Math and Science Education and I've completed my minor in Oceanography. My first two days in the classroom have been really exciting. I was able to complete one of the mandatory observations today, which was a really impressive history lesson on human evolution. I was also thrown into teaching a little today when I had to give directions for a simple machine lab and a solar model lab. As of right now, I'm teaching a mini lesson on energy with the 6th grade class Friday, and I will start the energy unit with them on Monday.
A little more about myself: I'm from Franklin, PA and graduated from Rocky Grove High School with 55 other students. I have two younger brothers (10 and 18) and a younger sister (12), but the younger two live with my mother in Virginia, so I don't see them as often as I'd like. I really enjoy the beach, hunting, reading, drawing, and baking.
In Edinboro, I am a member of the middle secondary club and often volunteer to help with campus activities. I was also a Resident Assistant for two years, first in Dearborn then in Earp Hall. I gained a lot of communication, organization, and time management skills through this experience and became a role model for a lot of students.
I am really passionate about science and exploration. I had the opportunity to go to Wallops Island, Virginia as part of my Oceanography minor. I took classes in marine science, ornithology, and coastal environmental oceanography, where I learned a lot about hands on education and the importance of interacting with your subject matter for learning. It was a great experience, and I hope to be able to bring some of that teaching style into my science classes this semester.
