Effective Discipline- Secret Six
I should have started with this chapter! With it being my last week in my first placement, it will be great to start out my new placement with these strategies and hints. I think that the effectiveness of my teaching with improve drastically. I have two students in each class of mine that I could have truly used a lot of this information on. The biggest thing that I got out of this chapter is to not let the students know when they're pushing your buttons as well as being an active teacher and what it looks like opposed to a reactive teacher.
When my buttons get pushed and I start to get frustrated I take a deep breath and I know the students have picked up on this and know that I am getting frustrated. At one point one of the students even pointed it out. They said, "Hey she's getting mad. We need to calm down." That only amped everyone else up. I stay calm and do not raise my voice, most of the time. But sometimes I do not keep my cool and do not have self-discipline. This is something that I need to work on and will work on this next week as well as in my next placement. I need to think of a way to not show how frustrated I am and continue on with my lesson but also address it at the same time. I like how the one teacher approached the girl sewing. I think that is a wonderful way to approach things.
The other thing that I got out of this chapter is to be an active teacher. Talk to the students as they're coming in to the room by saying thank you for coming with out an attitude and so forth. Addressing the issues before they become and issue and with a positive attitude. This will work wonders and should deflate any huge explosions that may occur during class.
Another thing that was addressed was How to Give Students What They Need. I loved this chapter. I think one of the biggest parts to being a teacher is know what your students want and need. There is no way to teach if we don't know the needs of our students. We need to know these things to build a relationship as well as to have them learn. They won't be as eager to pay attention to you if you don't have a relationship with them. This is so key. I have had many compliment from the teachers around the building I'm in on the relationships that I have built with the students that I'm with. And I'm very proud of this because it's so important to me. The teachers that I learned the least from are the teachers that didn't take the time to get to know me or the rest of the students.
