Hello everyone!
My name is Logan and I am at Saegertown High School. I'm in a 7th and 8th grade learning support classroom. My major is special education/ elementary education. I want to focus more on the special education part of my degree as students who are differently abled steel my heart!
I grew up in Grove City, PA at George Junior Republic, which is a juvenile delinquent facility. My parents were house parents since I was 5 months old until I was 17 years old. I lived with 8-12 boys who were convicted of a crime. This is not as scary as it sounds!! It is very much a safe place with many preventive procedures in case anything ever did happen. I think that growing up at George Junior was a huge advantage, being exposed to many different cultures and many different learning abilities.
I was very overwhelmed after Monday with all the information thrown at us. I already felt defeated after hearing that we would get a B if we couldn't commit to staying late or going in early or volunteering every hour of our lives to student teaching. Feeling defeated is not the way that I wanted to go in to this placement though. At that moment I changed my attitude completely, and was able to go in this placement with a positive, refreshed, and successful attitude. I think that this set the tone for my placement!
I absolutely love my placement so far! I jumped right in yesterday and taught my introductory lesson to four different classes. I actually made a rap, and they loved it!! It was very fun! The students have responded very well to me which is what I was most worried about. My co-op is a very spunky, energetic young lady who I have and will continue to learn so very much from. We push in to a math class and then teach different classes of English and Reading. I am enjoying it very much and think that this placement will be such an amazing learning experience!!
I hope that everyone has pleasant and enjoyable experience! :)
I felt really overwhelmed after practicum, too. You're definitely not alone there! I'm glad you didn't let it scare you enough to affect your determination.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you love your placement! It's really cool that you rapped to your students. I bet they really enjoyed it, and I think it will allow you to better relate to them in the future. It's good to put yourself out there and try new things, and I can tell you're taking full advantage of the opportunity you have. Good luck with the rest of the semester!
Logan,
ReplyDeleteYour childhood seems very interesting. I think it is great that your family was able to do that and help so many others. I can't imagine growing up with so many people in one house! Regardless, I can see how that will truly benefit you in education. I think it gives you the ability to connect with many different students that others may not be able to reach.
Good luck in your placement!
